About the Concert
The "Archduke" trio is so-named because it was dedicated by Beethoven to Archduke Rudolf of Austria. Completed in 1811, it is considered among the last of his "middle period" compositions. Beethoven himself played in the first performance, in April of 1814, and in the second performance a few weeks later. This second performance was Beethoven's last as a pianist: his deafness had grown so profound that Louis Spohr, the violinist, commented on one of the rehearsals, that "in forte passages the poor deaf man pounded on the keys until the strings jangled, and in piano he played so softly that whole groups of notes were omitted, so that the music was unintelligible unless one could look into the pianoforte part. I was deeply saddened at so hard a fate."
The Allegretto was composed in 1812, but not published until 1830, after Beethoven's death. It was written as a gift for the ten-year-old Maximiliane Brentano, daughter of a friend. The Milou Trio is preparing to make the first recording of this work, and we are privileged to hear it live at this concert. The two Cello Sonatas of Op. 102, composed in 1815, are considered by some to be the first of Beethoven's "late period" compositions, and begin to show some of the musical depth found in his late quartets, composed in 1825, near the end of his life. |

About the Milou Trio
The Milou Trio, consisting of Gwendolyn Mok (piano), Diane Nicholeris (violin), and David Goldblatt (cello) was formed in 2010, and has performed throughout the Bay Area on many prominent chamber series. The Trio appears regularly on the San Francisco Chamber Music Series in Davies Symphony Hall, and the satellite series Chamber Music Sundaes and at the New Hampshire Music Festival.
The Trio is named after Gwendolyn Mok's beloved dog, Milou (pronounced "Mee-lew"), a Lakeland Terrier.
In December of 2018, the Milou Trio appeared with the Ukiah Symphony under Les Pfutzenreuter, performing the Beethoven Triple. In 2020 the trio will be performing entire programs dedicated to Beethoven in celebration of his 250th anniversary.
Diane Nicholeris and Gwendolyn Mok met in 1983 at Tanglewood Music Festival. Diane and David have been members of the San Francisco Symphony since 1978 and 1984, respectively.
