About the Concert
Our season closes with the music of four composers from four neighboring countries that made up Bohemia less than 100 years ago. Gustav Mahler’s (Austria) music suggests drama and journey, capturing extremes of emotions that are worth taking time to examine. Songs of a Wayfarer is a perfect introduction to his personal, lush, and philosophically romantic style. Dazzling and intense mezzo-soprano Melinda Martinez Becker serves as the medium through which Mahler tells his story of “Love and sorrow! And world and dream!” (the final words of Songs of a Wayfarer). Frederic Chopin’s (Poland) piano music-turned ballet music, and a dramatic Beethoven (Germany) overture lead us to the final piece of the season: Antonin Dvorak’s (Czechia) Czech Suite(Dvorak is pronounced: d-Vor-zhack). This piece is a delightful interplay of Eastern European folk music and high art, and reminds us why Dvorak was Johannes Brahms’ favorite contemporary composer.

About Melinda Martinez Becker, mezzo-soprano
Picture
Mezzo soprano Melinda Martinez Becker is a multi-faceted performer singing a diverse repertoire of Renaissance, Baroque, and contemporary classical works, as well as French, Spanish and Ladino art song. As a soloist and chamber musician, she is recognized for her interpretations of various styles of music: "Throughout the program, mezzo-soprano Becker effortlessly switched tracks, from light Baroque singing to all the various demands of the new works". (San Francisco Classical Voice) She is noted for her "...notably expressive" vocal talents "particularly in light of all the styles she had to negotiate". (The Rehearsal Studio) In addition to performing throughout the Bay Area, she has performed throughout Spain, Portugal, Egypt, Austria, and France.

Through her passion for chamber music, she is a founding member of New Moon Duo with pianist Anne Rainwater, as well as Renegade Duo with guitarist Jon Mendle, a collaboration dedicated to performing uncommon and rarely heard repertoire for guitar and voice. As the vocalist of the all-female Baroque quartet Liaison Ensemble, she brings historically-informed performances of predominantly women composers throughout history to a wide range of audiences in non-traditional venues.

Melinda’s recent projects have included collaborations with emerging new music composers and various ensembles including Friction Quartet, Lightbulb Ensemble, The Hurd Ensemble, Helia Music Collective, the Musical Art Quintet, Phonochrome, Oakland-based Jazz band RDL+, Iranian singer Mahsa Vahdat, and as a soloist with Classical Revolution Orchestra's performance of Beethoven Symphony No. 9 at Grace Cathedral in San Francisco.

Melinda is currently an Artist in Residence at Ruth Asawa San Francisco School of the Arts, Vocal Director of musical theater productions at International High School, and maintains an active private teaching studio in San Francisco. (www.melindabecker.com)
